A must-see city in the Eastern Pyrenees and former capital of the kingdom of Majorca, don’t miss a visit to the Catalan city of Perpignan. Perpignan has kept intact its royal palace of southern gothic architecture and many other imposing historical monuments. In the old city center, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, built in the 14th century, is adjacent to the Romanesque church of St. John the Elder, the oldest religious building in the city. A paradise for cycling enthusiasts, the Pyrenees-Orientales is covered with cycling routes: from the Vélittorale to the mountain bike circuits in the Albères, via the Véloroute in the Pyrenees-Mediterranean region, there are so many itineraries that allow you to discover the jewels of the coast as well as the mountainous backcountry. From the famous “sentier pédestre des douaniers ” which runs along the entire Pyrenean coastline, a few hiking trails give access to the interior of the region and offer a sublime view of the surroundings. For example, the Madeloc Tower and Massane Tower circuits are among the most beautiful hikes to do in the Eastern Pyrenees.
What activities to do with your family in the Eastern Pyrenees? To entertain young and old, there are many gardens and animal parks in the Eastern Pyrenees. In the summer, you can also stroll in the heart of botanical gardens for the awakening of the senses or solve enigmas during mysterious escape games. La Vallée des Tortues in Sorede and the EcoZonia zoo are two animal parks where you can get up close and personal with animals and discover species from all over the world. If you don’t know what to do when it rains, take shelter at the Biodiversarium in Banyuls sur Mer, an aquarium and oceanological observatory at the gateway to Spain.
Many animations, local festivities and cultural events mark the year in the Pyrénées-Orientales. During the season, you can enjoy local markets, famous music festivals such as the Déferlantes in Argelès, Catalan folk festivals or the Electrobeach Music Festival – EMF in Barcarès.
